"Pennyrock" - Weston, Massachusetts
"Copper and stone abound here so I decided to name this place “Pennyrock”…You really must come here to understand the feeling…" DMK. Overview Created by show house designer and builder David M. Kane, the Pennyrock residence is quality. It incorporates state of the art systems with the classic look and feel of an aged estate. Sited privately on over two acres, it provides access to Boston and the local jetport at Hanscom Field, both just minutes away. With beautiful gardens and water features, one is reminded of the Cote Azure in the south of France. Modern systems monitor and allow simple, effective control of temperature, security, lighting and sound from each room or from anywhere in the world. There are eleven beautifully lit rooms, all with unique architectural details including an Au paire suite or home office with its own private entrance on the lower level. Heated garages on two levels allow for immediate access to four vehicles. The design elements represent the best of several continents and have been meticulously installed by New England craftspeople. Main Level Solid Philippine crafted double doors lead to the entry Hall with its own barrel ceiling of cherry and Mahogany above walls of New England fieldstone. One-hundred-year-old, wide-plank, oak flooring speaks to the feeling of superior detail as guests arrive. Eight-foot-high, glass French doors open from every room to see and hear the hand-carved limestone fountain born in France, while wonderful Antique brick pathways lead to and from the courtyard. French lavender borders complement the fountain. The shell pink Asiatic Lillies grow to eight feet with blooms of eight inches across in mid July. Hanging above the courtyard, window boxes with their own automatic watering system cascade flowers from the second floor windows. The second story windows have been designed to swing into the house so as not to damage the flowers when opened. European hardware cracks open the top of the window to keep out the rain, yet allow the sound of the fountain to enter for a restful sleep. On the main level, the Master Bedroom Suite is a focal point of the home. French doors on one end give direct access to a private conservatory or Orangery equipped with its own shower amidst the greenery. Banking the rear walls of the Master Suite, three sets of eight foot high double French doors open to the fountain courtyard, swimming pool and tennis court. Six skylights automatically close when rain is detected and each has electric remote-controlled black out shades for those who wish to sleep in. The bedroom has a beautiful cathedral ceiling with one of five working fireplaces, this one in cut stone and Vermont Granite. Wood storage is hidden in its own cabinetry. Camera lighting will perfectly frame the owner’s artwork above the mantle. The Master Bath is open and sunny with honed, eighteen-inch Durango tile. And, like the other 4 baths, its floor is thermostatically heated for comfort. World designer Barbara Barry fixtures and lighting in polished nickel accessorize the beautiful English Cherry vanity with his and her heated medicine cabinets. The French polish vanity was designed by David Kane and crafted outside London. Behind you is a walk-in Steam sauna with stone and glass walls and a Barbara Barry 10” rain shower. If desired, there is enough water volume to require two separate floor drains. Within easy reach of the shower door is a heated towel warmer. For soaking days, there is a two-person indoor spa with air bath, heated jets and a special shiatsu back massager. A large hot water storage system below quickly fills the spa. A separate room holds the water closet and ascending bidet. A beautifully crafted cherry walk-in dressing room has been brilliantly designed for the world traveler and has been outfitted with its own Miele Laudry system and matching roll iron for pressing bed linens. A cabinet is provided for everything! Custom lighting accents the hand-rubbed, finish cabinetry. Outdoor Living A six- person spa is ready year round just two steps outside of the conservatory and a covered galleria with Tuscan columns lends a bit of protected shade for hot summer days. Beyond the pool is a large sun bathing area paved in French Limestone with grout of Wooley Tyme for a fragrance underfoot. And for the cooler fall and spring evenings, there is a massive cut stone fireplace under the large Gazebo to extend the season for alfresco dining. Even the limestone floor is heated for those that wish to walk out on those cool nights for a barefoot cigar! Above the dining table is a classic, Italian-made chandelier in vine and hand cut crystal. The swimming pool wraps around the Gazebo creating a further mystique as it was placed on perfect axis with the fountain and fireplace. Hand made copper spires stand atop both of the rear gazebos and complete the symmetry. Somewhere below and completely underground is a wine cellar, a naturally perfect climate for a collector of thousands. The wine cellar access will remain a secret at the discretion of the owner. Kitchen Within easy reach of the herb garden this kitchen is a Chef’s dream and large enough for reception of over one hundred guests. And for large functions of several hundred guests, the nearby tennis court makes for a great tented platform. The kitchen is very well lit, organized and certainly the heartbeat of this home. There are two separate preparation areas when you require discreet staffing. Very obvious is the large, stone, wood-burning oven for perfect pizza or roasting. Guests are fascinated by the ambiance this stone oven creates, while children yearn to try their hand at pizza making! In the work area is a ten-foot long island with a thick, hand-planed cherry bar top from England. In the island is an enormous Le Grande Chateau La Cornue cooking Range with BBQ from France, shipped here with more care than a new Mercedes. A large custom hood crafted in Denmark in matching finish of brushed nickel sits overhead. The island has drawer refrigeration for items you wish readily accessible. In the butler pantry a large commercial refrigerator stores the rest. The compressors have been remote-located in the garage to keep out the heat and the noise. A Miele espresso machine is built into the stonewall and café is a mere button push away! Two handmade German silver sinks complement the antique feeling in this secretly very modern kitchen. A combination steam oven by Gagganeau is in the staffing area with one of the two custom-paneled Miele dishwashers. There is even more drawer refrigeration in the bar area with a clear ice machine and leaded glass cabinetry above. A wood countertop is used here to help to protect fine stemware. Low voltage lighting has been designed to highlight wall art and sculpture. Theatre & Acoustics Beyond the kitchen is the cathedral Theatre room set 5 steps down in elevation. Large windows look out over the clay tennis court below while French doors lead out to the gazebo and pool deck. Recessed in glass cabinetry is a stack of the latest components to channel in the surround sound. The theatre has a massive floor to ceiling fireplace with stones so large a crane was required to set them in place. Center stage is a fifty-inch plasma monitor to visually match the concert hall acoustics. Beautiful music is accessible and controlled throughout the home and outside with individual computer touch screens to control their respective speakers. As a “smart house” by Aegis Company, each room’s control panel can monitor and control music, lighting, security, messaging, paging and temperature. Three Levels Up on the third level are three more bedrooms, one of which is perfect for a home Gym with balcony windows from Denmark affording such views that one truly does get a sense of being outdoors during a workout. Tumbled marble is used in the baths here and the shower floors are assembled of small river rocks, which feel nice to the foot. Mechanicals From a mechanical standpoint, the home is state of the art behind the scenes. There are backup systems for nearly everything including a second natural gas furnace on standby if the primary should fail. Pennyrock has its own power plant. A V8 45kw Caterpillar generator is remote located in the nearby woods just in case the local power company should encounter problems. This power plant will satisfy the entire electrical requirement of the property with plenty of reserve. Upon electrical failure, the system will seamlessly take over until services are restored by local facilities and again a seamless transition back to normal. There is radiant heat under the floors on two levels and a computer learns when to subsidize with warm air as outside temperatures require. Even the hardwood floors are gently warmed by radiant below. The humidification is capable of putting up to 75 gallons of moisture per day as required to protect the intricate woodwork as well as the health benefits that go along with that. There are hepa filters and a life breath system for perfectly clean air as well. Exterior The entry walkway is automatically heated to melt snow in winter months. The entire roof is crafted in maintenance-free seam copper. This remarkable roof is complemented by a copper gutter system with an underground water collection system. Working gas flame lanterns complement the cast bronze waterspout atop the fountain center stage. Low voltage accent lighting highlights the exterior walls of New England fieldstone, while fiber optic lighting changes colors as desired in both the fountain and swimming pool. DAVID M.
